Program Professional Framework
Certified Switchman: High Voltage Switching Operations
Program Overview
High-voltage switching is a safety-critical task in which a single wrong operation can cause arc flash injuries, equipment damage or loss of supply. This course covers the knowledge and discipline expected of an authorised switching person: substation layouts and single-line diagrams, air-insulated and gas-insulated switchgear, interlocking, preparing and checking switching programmes, isolation and earthing, permit-to-work and lock-out/tag-out, safe operation of circuit breakers and disconnectors, SF6 handling precautions, communication with control rooms, and arc flash hazard awareness. Scenarios reflect oil and gas plants and utility substations in the region.
Learning Outcomes
- ✓Read single-line diagrams and identify isolation points, earthing points and interlocks for a switching task.
- ✓Prepare and independently check a switching programme for a planned outage.

Training Methodology
Applied Project & Assessment
Applied Project
Participants prepare a complete switching programme for a planned outage on a 33 kV or 132 kV feeder at a GCC plant or substation, including isolation and earthing points, permit requirements and a restoration sequence, and execute it in a simulated walk-through.
Assessment
Short diagnostic at the start, practical tasks linked to each learning outcome, and evaluation of the applied project against published criteria.
