Drilling Problems and Drilling Optimization

Non-productive time from stuck pipe, lost circulation, wellbore instability and well control events can consume a large part of a well budget, while modest gains in ROP add up across a drilling campaign. This course addresses both sides: recognising early warning signs, preventing and responding to common drilling problems, and improving performance through bit selection, hydraulics, drilling parameters, mechanical specific energy analysis and vibration control. Participants diagnose real incidents, compare remedial options and build optimisation plans from offset data from Gulf fields, where depleted zones, reactive shales and fractured carbonates are recurring challenges.

Drilling Problems and Drilling Optimization

Program Overview

Learning Outcomes

  • ✓Recognise early warning signs of stuck pipe, lost circulation, instability and kicks from real-time data.
  • ✓Select preventive measures and first-response actions for differential and mechanical sticking.
  • ✓Design a lost circulation strategy for depleted and naturally fractured formations.
  • ✓Diagnose the causes of wellbore instability and recommend mud weight and practice changes.
  • ✓Optimise ROP using drill-off tests, mechanical specific energy and hydraulics analysis.
  • ✓Quantify NPT from offset wells and prioritise improvement actions.

Target Audience

  • Drilling engineers and drilling supervisors
  • Toolpushers and rig managers
  • Mud engineers and drilling fluids specialists
  • Drilling performance engineers

Applied Project & Assessment

Applied Project

Participants analyse the drilling reports of a provided group of offset wells, classify NPT events by root cause, and present a prevention and optimisation plan for the next well with risk mitigations, parameter recommendations and target KPIs.

Assessment

Short diagnostic at the start, practical tasks linked to each learning outcome, and evaluation of the applied project against published criteria.
