Program Professional Framework
Radiographic Testing Level I Training and Certification SNT-TC-1A
Program Overview
Radiographic testing remains a core volumetric inspection method for welds and castings in pipelines, pressure vessels and plant piping. This entry-level programme builds the knowledge a Level I technician needs to perform radiographic exposures under written instructions: radiation physics, X-ray and gamma sources, film and digital imaging, image quality indicators, exposure set-up and darkroom or digital processing. Radiation protection is treated as a working discipline throughout, including dose monitoring and controlled area management in line with national radiation regulators in the Gulf.
Learning Outcomes
- ✓Explain the interaction of X-rays and gamma rays with matter and its effect on radiographic contrast and density.
- ✓Set up a single-wall exposure using a written technique sheet, correct source-to-film distance and IQI placement.
- ✓Apply the inverse square law and time, distance and shielding principles to define a controlled area boundary.
- ✓Process film or acquire digital images and check density and IQI sensitivity against the technique requirements.
- ✓Record exposure parameters and results accurately on standard inspection reporting forms.
Target Audience
- Trainee and junior NDT technicians

Training Methodology
Applied Project & Assessment
Applied Project
Each participant prepares a complete exposure package for a butt-welded pipe joint: technique sheet parameters, IQI selection and placement sketch, controlled area calculation with barrier distances, and a completed exposure record ready for Level II evaluation.
Assessment
Short diagnostic at the start, practical tasks linked to each learning outcome, and evaluation of the applied project against published criteria.
